The Wedjat, the Eye of Horus, appeared on Egyptian amulets earlier than almost any other symbol in the ancient world. Pharaohs wore it. The dead were buried with it pressed against their bodies. Priests painted it on the prows of boats to help them see the way. It represented the eye of Horus torn out in battle with Set and later healed by the god Thoth. That act of restoration gave the symbol its meaning: protection, recovery, the capacity to see through harm and keep going.
For three thousand years of continuous Egyptian civilisation, the Wedjat was reproduced more than almost any other image in their visual culture. There was a reason for that.
The pendant
Cast in 316L surgical grade stainless steel and weighing 12.5g, the pendant has genuine presence in the hand before it goes on. At 35mm tall and 26.7mm wide, the Wedjat sits at chest level with the same authority the original amulet carried. A vivid blue eye inlay fills the iris, surrounded by flame detail radiating outward from the pupil. The characteristic Egyptian markings below the eye, the spiral and the blade, are cleanly rendered in the same antique darkened steel finish that gives the whole piece depth.
The chain is a 60cm wheat link, substantial enough to carry the weight of the pendant without looking thin against it.
316L steel holds what plated metal loses
Surgical grade 316L stainless steel does not tarnish, does not react with skin, and does not change appearance over time. A plated pendant loses its finish. This one does not. Worth knowing when you are deciding whether £23.99 is a piece to wear for a season or for years.
For anyone with a serious interest in ancient Egypt, Egyptian mythology, or the archaeology of protective symbols, this is a gift that needs no explanation to the right person.
