Tree of Life Runic Pendant | Viking Yggdrasil Necklace

Nine worlds held together by one tree. Yggdrasil connected all of them.

A 34mm Yggdrasil pendant in stainless steel, the World Tree set within a runic border with Valknut and Triskele on the face. Norse cosmology placed Yggdrasil at the centre of everything: the axis between realms, the root system beneath the dead, the canopy over the living. This pendant takes that cosmological map and puts it around your neck.

What Yggdrasil Was

In Norse cosmology, Yggdrasil was not a symbol of nature in any simple sense. It was the structure of the universe. The cosmic ash tree reached through all nine worlds: Asgard at its crown where the gods lived, Midgard at its centre where humans lived, Niflheim at its roots where the dead went, and six further realms in between. Three wells lay at its roots, each with its own significance: the Well of Urd, where the Norns wove fate; Mimir's Well, where Odin sacrificed his eye for wisdom; and Hvergelmir, the source of the great rivers.

The tree was not passive. It was inhabited by a stag that ate its leaves, an eagle in its canopy, a serpent gnawing at its roots, and a squirrel named Ratatoskr running between them carrying slanders and messages. Yggdrasil was alive, contested, and maintained against the forces that wanted it to fail. The name itself is usually translated as "Odin's horse": the gallows on which Odin hung himself for nine days to gain the knowledge of the runes.

This is a symbol that carries an entire cosmology. Wearing it means something specific to the people who know what it means.

The Pendant

The tree is set within a circular form 34mm across, framed by a runic-style border that runs the outer edge. The face carries additional detail: a Valknut and a Triskele, two further symbols from the Norse world that deepen the piece's cosmological vocabulary. The Triskele, three interlocking spirals, appears in both Celtic and Norse contexts and is associated with cycles, the three realms, and continuous motion. The Valknut brings Odin's presence into the composition.

The overall design is balanced and legible. It is one of the more densely layered pieces in the HC collection, which makes it well suited to buyers who are interested in the symbols themselves rather than a single, bold motif.

The Historical Note

The Prose Edda, compiled by Snorri Sturluson in thirteenth-century Iceland, is the fullest account of Yggdrasil that survives, and Snorri was a Christian writing about a pre-Christian tradition. How much of his account reflects genuine Viking Age belief and how much is his own organisation of fragmentary material is a question Norse scholars still argue about. What is clear is that the tree cosmology is old: cognate versions of the World Tree myth appear across Germanic, Indo-European, and broader traditions, suggesting the concept preceded the Viking Age by centuries. Snorri wrote it down. He did not invent it.

Who This Is For

For anyone drawn to Norse cosmology, mythology, or the deeper architecture of the Viking world, this pendant offers more symbolism per square centimetre than most comparable pieces. It is a natural choice for people who have moved past the surface-level Viking iconography and want a piece that reflects a more considered interest. It is also an easy gift for someone who reads widely in Norse mythology, follows the history, or travels to Scandinavian heritage sites.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Yggdrasil?

Yggdrasil is the cosmic ash tree that lies at the centre of Norse cosmology, connecting all nine worlds of the Norse universe: from Asgard at the crown to Niflheim at the roots. It appears in the Old Norse Poetic Edda and in the Prose Edda compiled by Snorri Sturluson in thirteenth-century Iceland. The name is usually translated as "Odin's horse," a kenning for the gallows on which Odin hanged himself for nine days to receive the knowledge of the runes. In Norse belief, the tree was a living, contested structure maintained against forces that would destroy it. It represents interconnection, the cycle of existence, and the axis between realms.

What do the Valknut and Triskele on this pendant mean?

The Valknut, three interlocked triangles, is associated with Odin and with the warrior dead in Viking Age archaeology, appearing on burial stones and grave goods across Scandinavia. The Triskele, three interlocking spirals, is a symbol found across both Norse and Celtic contexts and is associated with cycles, the three realms, and continuous motion. Both appear here alongside the World Tree, creating a pendant that references several layers of Norse and broader northern European symbolism. The piece does not claim to represent a single historical artefact; it draws on authentic symbols in a contemporary composition.

What is stainless steel and will it tarnish?

The stainless steel used in this pendant is a corrosion-resistant alloy that will not tarnish, discolour, or react with skin under normal wear conditions. No polishing, coating, or specialist storage is required. Both the silver-tone and gold-tone finishes are designed for durability under daily use.

How long does delivery take?

Approximately 10 days to UK addresses. Every order ships tracked and free. If you need the piece by a specific date, contact us before ordering and we will confirm whether timing is achievable.
