Our AI Policy

Yes, we use AI, and we're not shy about it.

You won't find a photographer's contact sheet from a thirteenth century siege, so where a scene calls for one, we use AI to bring it to life, often photorealistically, because history deserves to look as vivid as it actually was.

We also use AI to help with research and early drafting, but every article is reviewed and signed off by our Editor in Chief, Simon A. Williams, so accuracy and integrity stay firmly in human hands.

And it doesn't stop at images and words. Wherever AI can make the site more engaging, more useful, or easier to explore, we'll use it there too.

Some people call AI imagery a shortcut. We'd call leaving history dull and hard to access, when the tools exist to fix that, the bigger problem.

So no, we don't think using AI this way is unethical. We think not using it would be.
