Watched, from the first page
George Orwell, born Eric Blair, published Nineteen Eighty-Four on 8 June 1949, months before his death in January 1950. It is set in Oceania, where Britain has become Airstrip One, and its signature image is surveillance: posters of Big Brother whose eyes follow you around the room, and telescreens that broadcast to you and watch you at the same time. Orwell wrote it with the propaganda and state control of the 1930s and 1940s fresh in his mind, which is why it still reads as a warning rather than a fantasy.
This George Orwell 1984 t-shirt turns that idea into a single image: the eye above, the crowd below.
A closer look at the design
A large eye with a camera-lens pupil sits inside a tiered tower, with red signal arcs radiating from either side. Beams of red light fall from the eye onto a crowd of white silhouettes, gathered in a circle below, with one figure standing a little ahead of the rest. The all-seeing eye is visual shorthand rather than a scene from the book, but it speaks the same language as the telescreen and the poster. The artwork is printed across the chest on black.
The shirt itself
The tee is 100% cotton at around 180 gsm. That is heavy enough to hold its shape and keep the print sharp wash after wash, rather than going thin and shapeless by next summer.
Fit and sizing
It has a classic, relaxed fit, in sizes S to 5XL. Check the size guide on this page and compare it with a favourite tee you already own. If you are between sizes, go up one for a roomier fit.
Print and care
The design is printed directly onto the fabric. To keep it looking its best, machine wash cold and turn the shirt inside out.
Made, dispatched, delivered
Each tee is made to order by a local print partner, with production taking 2 to 7 business days. Delivery is free worldwide. If you change your mind, you have 14 days from receiving your order to tell us you would like to return it.
Who it is for
This tee is for readers of dystopian fiction, English literature students working through Orwell, and anyone who has ever reread the novel and felt uncomfortable about the news. It also makes a good gift for a friend who owns three copies already. Browse the rest of the range in our history tee shirts.
