The Celtic knotwork cross is one of the oldest continuously used decorative forms in European history. The interlocking geometry that fills the arms of this pendant traces a lineage through early Christian stone carving, illuminated manuscripts, and the decorative metalwork of medieval Europe. When the crusading military orders adopted the cross as their emblem, they inherited a symbol that already carried centuries of meaning in the visual culture of western Christianity.
At the centre of this pendant, the two traditions meet. A red enamel Templar cross sits within a circular medallion bordered by the Sigillum Latin inscription, a reference to the seal imagery associated with the Knights Templar. Around that medallion, Celtic knotwork fills each arm of the cross, the continuous interlacing pattern working its way from the bail to the tip of each arm without interruption.
The pendant in detail
The cross is cast in stainless steel with the knotwork worked into the surface in deep relief, the recessed areas darkened to throw the raised pattern into contrast. The red enamel at the centre provides a focal point against the metal ground that reads clearly from a distance. The wheat chain matches the finish of the pendant, with the same weight and scale as the piece demands.
Available in gold tone and steel tone. The gold variant warms the red enamel considerably and gives the piece the look of something ecclesiastical. The steel tone is cooler and sits closer to the medieval metalwork tradition the design references.
For anyone who takes the detail seriously
For anyone interested in the Crusades, the history of the military orders, Celtic decorative tradition, or medieval European art, this pendant is a considered piece with genuine visual depth. It carries more meaning than most jewellery at this price.
