The Hamsa and the Nazar come from different traditions but have been travelling together for a long time. The Hamsa, an open hand with an eye at its palm, moves through ancient Mesopotamia, across Jewish and Islamic culture as the Hand of Miriam and the Hand of Fatima, and into the jewellery of the modern Mediterranean and Middle East. The Nazar, the blue concentric eye bead, belongs to Turkish and Greek tradition above all others, hung above every Turkish threshold and worn on the wrist of Greek sailors for reasons most people understand intuitively even if they cannot explain them precisely.
Put on the same chain or in this case, two chains worn together, they amplify each other. The hand gestures outward in protection. The eye watches.
What the necklace looks like
Two fine box chains in the same finish drop at different lengths, 40cm and 47cm, creating the layered effect without requiring any effort from the wearer. The shorter chain carries a small round blue enamel Nazar, the classic concentric circle eye in sky blue and white with a dark pupil. The longer chain carries a plain Hamsa hand pendant in the same metal tone, the hand shape clearly defined with a small eye engraved at the centre of the palm.
The whole piece is light. It sits close to the collarbone and moves easily. Available in gold tone and silver tone, it pairs well with other pieces or wears alone.
A gift that lands without explanation
For anyone connected to Turkish, Greek, Jewish, or broader Mediterranean heritage, this necklace needs no introduction. For anyone who simply appreciates the history of protective symbolism, it carries considerably more meaning than its price suggests.
