Baroque jewellery was not subtle and did not intend to be. The style that emerged in seventeenth century Europe, and that ran through court dress and portraiture for the following hundred years, was built on the principle that abundance was the point. Heavy gold settings, coloured stones, pendants within pendants, layers of ornament on top of layers of ornament. The brooch was at the centre of that aesthetic, used to pin cloaks, secure necklines, and signal wealth and status at a glance from across a room.
This brooch works in that tradition.
What you are looking at
At the centre sits a large oval cabochon in pink with an iridescent surface that shifts between rose, gold, and violet depending on the light. It is set in a rope twist bezel within the main body of the brooch. The surrounding openwork frame is cast in antique gold tone metal in a baroque scroll pattern, set with alternating round peridot green and pale pink crystals and three green teardrop stones at the cardinal points. At the top, a three-star banner in gold adds a finishing decorative element to the upper crest.
Below the main body hangs a teardrop shaped openwork drop, the interior cast as a stylised lotus or sunflower medallion with a single pale pink crystal at its centre. The drop adds another 3cm to the total length, bringing the full piece to 11.2cm by 6cm.
At that scale, this brooch is worn as a centrepiece. It suits a lapel, the shoulder of a coat, or the centre of a formal scarf. It does not disappear.
An immediate gift
For anyone drawn to vintage jewellery, Edwardian or baroque revival aesthetics, or statement accessories that arrive looking as though they deserve to be worn somewhere significant, this brooch answers without qualification.
