A Day to Forget: The Real Battle of Hastings

The 14th of October 1066 was a day of bloodshed, exhaustion, and strategic blunders. Harold Godwinson, fresh from repelling a Viking invasion at Stamford Bridge, rushed his army south to meet William of Normandy. With little time to recover, the Anglo-Saxons found themselves at Senlac Hill, where they made their stand.

Harold’s shield wall held strong at first, but William had a few tricks up his sleeve. Feigned retreats lured Harold’s men from their defensive position, and with each charge, the Norman cavalry whittled down the Saxon resistance. By the end of the day, Harold had fallen – supposedly struck by an arrow to the eye – and William had secured his place in history as William the Conqueror.

A Legendary Disaster

The Battle of Hastings changed England forever. The Norman Conquest led to a new ruling elite, a shift in culture, and even changes to the English language. But for Harold? It was an absolute nightmare.
